The lack of nutrients in wastewater treatment arises mainly due to the absence of nitrogen (N) or phosphorus (P). For optimal efficiency, microorganisms require a BOD: nitrogen: phosphorus ratio of 100: 5: 1. If the available amount of nitrogen or phosphorus is too small, then this will affect the removal of PFC. Another consequence of nutritional deficiencies is filamentous swelling caused by unwanted organisms that get along well in low nutrient conditions. In order for the wastewater treatment system to work as efficiently as possible, it is important to have both suitable microorganisms and the correct ratio of nutrients.
